In the hills overlooking Sonoma Valley this 1950’s home needed an aesthetically sensitive kitchen remodel to bring it up to date with 21st century sensibilities. Extensive structural and finish details were required to create an end product that looks consistent with the rest of the home.

For a strong midcentury focus we concentrated on the straight lines and horizontal planar appearance of the space; using flat panel cabinets with a horizontal, quarter-sawn cherry cabinetry and horizontal pulls in brushed aluminum. For the counters we chose Quartz Vedara Statuario for its contrasting flow and blue veining that pops against the warm cherry cabinetry

We accessorized with contrasting colors like classic burnt orange vintage glassware against the seafoam blue of the custom banquette. The curves of the Saarinen table and globe pendants punctuate the otherwise linear environment.

We utilized space saving technologies and smart storage solutions for this kitchen including vertical lift up doors, Magic-Corner cabinets that utilize otherwise dead corners, and toe-kick drawers.

The floor and ceiling of this space had to be structurally leveled so that the cabinetry could be perfectly scribed to fit against them without gaps. A large slider was added from the kitchen to the wrap-around deck so that we could create a formal outdoor dining area.

The Waterfall edge on the island was a contemporary feature that would have certainly been at home in the 1950’s aesthetic. A 3D tile used behind the range evokes the starburst patterns that can be found on vintage furniture around the home.

Samuel and I have worked closely over the past few months on my kitchen remodel. He has a good eye for detail and great design ideas. His drawings are professional and reviewed every detail with us. I’ve worked with other designers but Sam is a step above. He has been a lifesaver, I couldn’t have done it without him.
